Abstract

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) rely on limited-energy batteries that cannot be recharged or replaced, making energy efficiency a crucial topic. While previous studies have focused on selecting the head to reduce the energy consumption of the sensor nodes, this paper aims to address another weakness of clustering in WSNs: better cluster formation for each header to minimize energy consumption across the network. To achieve this goal, an advanced algorithm based on a Manifold distance-based Whale Optimization Algorithm (M-WOA) is presented. The idea is to send a packet from a source to the header using intermediate nodes, which may consume less energy than delivering the packet directly. Selecting the interface neighbors based on the remaining energy in each sensor is vital in increasing the lifetime of the entire network. The MATLAB results indicate that the proposed algorithm successfully extends network lifetime, particularly in scenarios with many scattered sensors in space.
